3 ways to let go of the need for certainty + face the fear of the unknown

So the news I've been hinting at? Well I can finally spill the beans + give you an update what's been happening….

When I returned to work in January, I quit my job!

And this week is officially my first week of being self-employed + an entrepreneur-to-be {more on that to follow!}

I wasn't kidding when I said 2014 was going to be the year of feeling the fear + doing it anyway -  so yep, my intention is in full swing.

Thing is, quitting my full time job + stepping into the unknown is wildly out of my comfort zone. I've always been a planner and have needed a good dose of certainty in anything I've ever done - it has been one of my greatest strengths (heck, I even made a career out of it!) and yet it's also my greatest downfall, because I've always been the person who's needed a plan; a direction and a level of certainty of knowing how things will turn out.

According to Tony Robbins, there are 6 fundamental desires that every human has in common, with certainty being one of them.

The need for certainty is driven by the assurance of avoiding pain + gaining pleasure, which is most often at the expense of living outside your comfort zone.

The opposite of this is living a life driven by faith, trusting and believing in yourself; and what I've come to realise that in order to move forward to live the kind of life I'm really, truly excited to wake up and live everyday, this means stepping outside my comfort zone; embracing my fears + being ok with uncertainty.

This isn't as simple as it sounds and requires a whole of work to remove any blocks that have been holding you back, but I want to share with you three practices to start getting more comfortable with less certainty in your life.

1. Develop a regular meditation practice.

This has been key for me; I've spoken about the benefits of meditation before and this is also something I talk about in my ebook.

Meditation allows you to clear out the mindless chatter going on in that head, to get to the core essence of you and through creating this space, you begin to expose the strength that lies within you.

Being able to trust and harness the power inside yourself enables you to tap into what Deepak Chopra describes as the field of pure potentiality - where your true self holds the belief that anything is possible.

2. Cultivate a heart-centred life.

Do you over-analyse decisions and feel stuck when you never arrive at the 'right' answer? This is classic ego-driven behaviour.

Cultivating a heart-centred life is about letting go of your ego and getting out of the headspace of 'over-thinking' things, leaving you open to make heart-centred decisions, as opposed to making logical, fact-worthy decisions that are often driven by fear.

Try this next time you feel overwhelmed by a decision you need to make: close your eyes; take some deep breathes and with your hand placed over your heart, ask yourself the question you need answered. Become aware of how your heart reacts to the question and you'll know quickly what your gut is telling you.

3. Let go of who you think you 'should be' to become who you are meant to be.

This is a tough one because when we're holding onto someone else's ideal of who we think we should be or what we should be doing we're being driven by the level of certainty we crave.

But the reality is that getting caught up in other people's expectations and comparing ourself to others, are both examples of not living your truth.

Ask yourself: are your actions aligned with what it is you truly want? What would you need to do differently in order to create the kind of life that you'd be excited to live, everyday?

Am I nervous about the next chapter? heck yes!

Wildly excited? You betcha!

But I'm feeling the fear and doing it anyway; going along for the ride + embracing this new level of uncertainty.
