I have a confession: I was a born worrier and am prone to being extremely anxious. Ever since I was young I’ve always had a tendency to worry and become anxious about circumstances, events and situations well beyond my control and end up letting them consume me.
Of course I know that getting overly anxious is a complete waste of energy; and more recently through practicing mindfulness, meditation and generally becoming a lot more aware of my over-anxious tendencies, I have become a lot better (but I'm nowhere near perfect!).
Then after seeing this on Pinterest (that got re-pinned over 700 times!!) I figured I’m not the only one who over-analyses and stresses about things beyond my control.
Thing is, when our energy is so focused on our external world, it takes up way too much of our headspace and means we’re no where near as productive as we could be. Becoming more mindful is the first step to living a productive + positive life.
So, today I thought I'd share 5 simple things I need to remind myself of daily that have helped me to become far more conscious of my thoughts when I go through bouts of anxiety.
1. Be the conscious creator of your life.
Rather than letting things ‘happen to you’, instead focus on what outcomes you can create with your own actions. Many circumstances are completely beyond our control, but we always, always have a choice in how we respond to situations.
2. Let go of things that are not serving you.
Excessive worry and anxiousness means you’re not focusing on the here and now - you’re either worrying about something that has happened in the past or something that hasn’t happened in the future. Let go of things that happened in the past - no matter what you cannot change it. Make peace with it and take the lesson with you. The future is up to you and you create it with every action you take; worrying about how it will turn out is literally betting against yourself and your awesomeness.
3. Learn to accept the things you cannot change.
I get it, it’s freaking challenging to have your hopes and dreams pinned on a specific outcome, but even if things don’t turn out the way you planned, you can bet that a new and better plan will present itself. Clinging to the outcome is not going to change. Let it go.
4. Choose to see the good in everything.
We're often so quick to jumping to the worst possible conclusion and dream up the worst case scenario that we forget all the good stuff that is happening right now. No matter how bad things may seem there is always something we can be grateful for to focus our energy on.
5. Be patient + trust your journey.
Trust that things will happen when the time is right. Everyone is on their own unique journey and constantly worrying about whether you're where you're supposed to be or that you're not 'measuring up' against your peers is a waste of time! Don't rush things; surrender + focus your energy on where you want to be and let it naturally evolve.
