From Social Worker to Copywriter: Che Johnson’s Career Change Story

I’m so excited to share this conversation with the amazing Che Johnson, a soulful copywriter whose story is a beautiful example of what it looks like to step off the expected path and carve out a career that feels deeply aligned.

Che and I go way back. We first connected during the early blogging days, and we’ve stayed in touch over the years. When I started curating these conversations, she was one of the first people who came to mind. Not only is her journey inspiring, but Che herself is such a grounded, wise, and generous human.

Leaving the “Safe” Path

Like many of us, Che started her career on a well-trodden path: school → university → a professional role as a social worker. From the outside, it looked secure and sensible. But inside, she knew something wasn’t right.

Despite being good at her job, she often felt drained and disconnected. That subtle but persistent sense of misalignment eventually became impossible to ignore.

Rediscovering Her Passions

What’s powerful about Che’s story is how her shift didn’t happen overnight. It started with a small step: giving herself permission to explore what truly lit her up. One experiment led to another, and soon she rediscovered her love for words and storytelling.

That curiosity cracked open the door to a new path. Before long, she realised she could actually get paid to do work that felt natural, energising, and deeply aligned with her values.

The Leap into Copywriting

Of course, career transitions are rarely smooth. Che took side jobs, juggled responsibilities, and faced plenty of self-doubt. But she also stayed anchored in her values and listened closely to her inner compass.

That commitment to alignment helped her navigate the uncertainty. Over time, she built a thriving business as a copywriter — one that not only sustains her, but also brings her joy.

Living in Flow

Today, Che’s life looks radically different from her social work days. Instead of feeling like an outsider in her own career, she’s created a business that reflects who she is at her core.

She’s proof that fulfillment doesn’t come from doing what you’re merely “good at” — it comes from honouring your values, trusting yourself, and taking small but steady steps toward what feels alive.

Her daily practices - tuning into her body, calming her nervous system, and following what feels true - are what keep her grounded and resilient, even when challenges arise.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why “being good at something” isn’t the same as living in alignment.

  • The signs of career misalignment Che couldn’t ignore.

  • How small experiments can open doors to entirely new paths.

  • The power of values and intuition in making career decisions.

  • How to navigate the uncertainty of change without losing momentum.

  • What life looks like when you choose differently, and create a career that feels like home.

Che’s story is such a powerful reminder that alignment isn’t a luxury - it’s essential. And often, the path toward it begins with the smallest of steps.
