Rising from the Ashes After Life-Changing Events: Discovering Your True North with Meg James
Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Meg James - a Trauma Recovery Coach and Meditation Teacher who helps people with traumatic histories break free from survival mode and rise from the ashes. As one of the leading teachers on the Insight Timer and Kic (Keep it Cleaner) apps, her guided meditations have reached more than 4 million people worldwide.
I first came across Meg’s work several years ago and was immediately struck by her presence, depth, and the way she had built a career so firmly rooted in purpose. Watching her evolution has been deeply inspiring, so I was eager to sit down with her and explore her story: the twists, the turning points, and the practices that helped her find her true calling.
Watch our full conversation below to hear Meg share her journey in her own words.
From Misaligned Beginnings to Corporate Burnout
Like many of us, Meg’s career path didn’t begin with clarity. During her high school years, she was steered toward directions that looked “sensible” but were completely out of alignment with her true nature. This pressure eventually led her into a career in Media and Advertising - a path that promised financial stability but left her utterly miserable.
She describes those years as some of the most soul-draining of her life. While her peers thrived on parties and long corporate nights, Meg felt like the odd one out - the “black sheep” who would rather spend her weekends doing yoga, meditating, or attending retreats. The misalignment in values only grew louder until it became impossible to ignore.
Returning to Her Roots
What set Meg apart, even back then, was that she had been introduced to meditation and yoga from a young age. These practices became an anchor in her life, offering clarity and grounding when her career path felt increasingly hollow.
The internal tug of war between “what she was supposed to do” and “what her heart knew was right” eventually reached breaking point. She began to trust those practices more deeply, using them to tune into her inner compass.
The Turning Point
There came a pivotal moment when Meg knew she could no longer continue in her corporate role. She made the courageous decision to step away, even without a perfectly clear plan. What followed was a series of serendipitous opportunities that affirmed she was on the right track.
By allowing herself time to experiment, explore, and flow, she began carving out a new career in mindfulness and meditation. It wasn’t easy, but with each step, her life began to align more closely with her truth.
Rising Through Challenge
Meg’s journey wasn’t without difficulty. Unexpected, life-changing events entered her path, the kind that might have derailed someone else entirely.
But instead of breaking her, these experiences became the fire that forged her purpose. Through them, she uncovered the deeper “why” behind her work: supporting others to heal, rise, and create lives beyond survival.
The Power of Feeling Over Planning
What I find most inspiring about Meg is her reminder that transformation doesn’t always come from rigid plans or strategies. Instead, she shares how the real magic happens when we get out of our heads and into our hearts, when we allow ourselves to feel, to listen inward, and to move with intuition rather than force.
Meg continues to lean on simple, consistent practices - meditation, mindfulness, and tuning into her body’s signals to guide her career decisions.
And from that place of alignment, she has built a career not only of impact but also of deep personal fulfillment.
Meg’s story is a powerful reminder that even the most painful detours can become catalysts for our greatest purpose. When we stop fighting misalignment and start listening inward, we find the path that was waiting for us all along.
